Over many years, Melbourne has lead the nation’s population growth, adding a ridiculous one million people (a 27% increase) in the 12 years to June 2016:

Today, Bernard Salt – the self-proclaimed “unabashed supporter of a Bigger Australia” – has penned an article in The Australian arguing that Melbourne will overtake Sydney in the 2030s to become “the greatest city on the Australian continent in the 21st century”:
