Following the hail comes the rain of coolie panelbeaters

It’s like clockwork these days, via The Australian:

Car owners are likely to face delays in getting their vehicles fixed in the wake of Thursday’s hailstorm in Sydney and on the NSW Central Coast due to a nationwide skills shortage, the motor trades’ peak industry body says.

Chief executive of the Motor Trades Association of Australia Richard Dudley said there was a “massive shortage” of skills in the motor body repair industry across the country, meaning it was far less likely that repairers would be able to be brought in from interstate to deal with the large number of vehicles damaged by the storm.

“It will test the industry,” he said.

As it happens, the federal government has panelbeaters on the shortage list:

But is that really surprising given the crash in technical education and training owing to the cry of “skills shortages” every time the weather turns?

It’s a broken system that guarantees no worker ever gets ahead.
