Bad news for renters as vacancies plummet to 16-year low

SQM research has released rental vacancy data for January, which has fallen to a 16-year low of just 1.3%:

As shown above, rental vacancies have cratered to just 1.1% in Brisbane and are tracking below 1.0% across all of the other smaller capitals. By contrast, vacancies are looser in Sydney and Melbourne, which have been hit harder by the collapse in immigration.
