A report from The Group of Eight universities claims that of the 11,000 new engineers tipped to be needed each year over the next five years, only half are now graduating. The shortage of engineers is being attributed to a range of factors, including a decline in international student numbers and two years of no skilled immigration, and is likely to restrict the boom in infrastructure projects:
“Australia’s supply of engineers has been declining over the past decade, exacerbated by a 26 per cent decline in permanent and temporary migration from 2015-2018,” [Group of Eight chief executive Vicki Thomson said]…
The solution must focus on increasing enrolments of domestic students in engineering courses, the report says.
