Aussie politicians have chosen “lazy population growth”

The AFR’s Political Editor, Phillip Coorey, appeared on Sky News on Tuesday to discuss the 2023 Intergenerational Report (IGR), which projects that Australia’s population will balloon by 14.2 million (54%) over the next 40 years to 40.5 million people.

Coorey argued that the federal government has chosen “lazy” population growth rather than policies aimed at growing the economy via productivity improvement:

“This brings into play things like immigration, where Australia has sort of taken the lazy approach of economic growth by just, you know, using population to drive economic growth as a principle tool”.
