Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk tweeted the below over the weekend spruiking eight new factory-built homes in Gympie that have been delivered to tenants:

The Tweet was greeted with derision by commenters who lamented that the “Australian dream” has effectively been turned into living in trailer parks in shed dongers.

You can hardly blame them. They are effectively caravans without wheels and resemble the type of trailer park homes you would see in America.

I am surprised Palaszczuk didn’t throw in the marketing terms “minimalist” and “sustainable living” to try and trick the public into believing that such tiny homes are a genuine solution to the housing crisis.
Caravan parks have traditionally been used to provide emergency accommodation to the poor. They are one rung above being homeless.
But with the nation’s population projected in the Intergenerational Report to swell by 14.2 million people in only 40 years – equivalent to adding a combined Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide to the nation’s population – so-called ‘tiny home’ living will become a more common feature.
