Say “No” to a Big Australia

On April 20th, MacroBusiness’ very own Unconventional Economist, Leith van Onselen, will be the headline speaker at a public forum in Adelaide: “From housing crisis to eco-crisis: Why Australia’s population growth is unsustainable?”

Leith will be joined by Dr Jane O’Sullivan and Peter Strachan, the incoming President of Sustainable Population Australia (SPA). SPA is hosting this free public afternoon event.

For nearly 40 years, SPA has been the ONLY national environmental NGO brave enough to speak up about the elephant in the room—the population Ponzi explosion being rolled out by both major parties.

This is not only undemocratic, with most Australians opposed to a BIG Australia, but it is also devastating for everything from housing security to Australia’s unique and diminishing natural environment.

SPA is standing up on behalf of all Australians who are saying enough is enough.

This year, we launched our new campaign ‘Say NO to Big Australia!’

Our plan is simple- we get enough signatures on our Position Statement to demonstrate the anger the Australian people are feeling about the unmandated Big Australia/mass immigration population agenda being imposed on our country. SPA will then use these signatures as proof of the will of the Australian people when lobbying on your behalf.

To date, we have nearly 3,000 signatures, and we are about to engage in a nationwide online promotion campaign in cooperation with a leading advertising agency.

Our big goal is to make this THE election issue and force a policy shift towards population stabilisation below 30 million. This will give us the time we need to catch up on housing and general infrastructure while undertaking the necessary economic and ecological studies needed to reassess our goals and priorities.

On this issue, SPA shares common ground with MacroBusiness, the only major national media outlet willing to openly and reliably criticise Australia’s turbocharged economic migration program.

Leith van Onselen was the lead author of SPA’s first discussion paper “Population growth and infrastructure in Australia: the catch-up illusion” in 2019. Leith was also a past guest on the SPA supported “Post Growth Australia Podcast”.

Since then, SPA has launched many more papers around the impacts of Ponzi population growth. Last year, Jane O’Sullivan co-authored “The Housing Crisis is a Population Crisis”. Ours is one of the few academically backed reports that demonstrates with certainty that Australia’s housing crisis is a demand, rather than supply-fueled issue.

Unsurprisingly, the report was largely ignored by politicians, housing NGOs and the mainstream media. However, it has been supported by thousands of concerned everyday Australians, many of whom are at the receiving end of this politically engineered housing crisis, which now reaching a state of dystopia reminiscent of The Hunger Games.

SPA invited Australians to send letters to their Federal MPs to spell out why the housing crisis is a population crisis, which we have made easy through our DoGooder letter campaign.

We are very pleased that to date, hundreds of letters have been sent to Federal Lower House MPs, with all emails copied to Federal Housing Minister Julie Collins.

SPA’s free public forum on the 20th of April will draw together years of advocacy on the critical issue of Australia’s population.

Dr Jane O’Sullivan will speak on the topic of “Albanese’s immigration overhaul: No relief in sight despite ‘sustainable immigration’ pledge.”

Keynote speaker Leith van Onselen will speak to the topic “Australia’s immigration and the everything shortage”.

SPA and MacroBusiness share much common ground and we trust this afternoon seminar in Adelaide will appeal to the MacroBusiness community.

If you are not in Adelaide the event will be live streamed.

We look forward to seeing you there.
