The Greens have called for the creation of a National Renters Protection Authority, with the Greens likening the proposed body to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
Costed by the independent Parliamentary Budget Office at $200 million a year, the Authority would be given the power to run inspections and investigations of real estate companies and property owners and to refer serious offenders for prosecution and large fines.
The Greens’ housing spokesman, Max Chandler-Mather, says the National Renters Protection Authority would fight to protect every renter’s right to a secure and affordable home.
